MaryKate Flores Therapy Austin

MaryKate "KT" Flores, LPC Associate

Supervised by Sarah Walters, LPC-S

Hello! My name is MaryKate, but my friends call me KT (and you can too!) It’s important to me that you can feel comfortable with me as you might a good friend or confidant. I really believe that a big part of therapy is giving you the space to be who you need to be non-judgmentally, kindly, and openly.

I have worked with a wide variety of people, but I work mostly with trauma-related distress, depression, and anxiety. I have a passion for helping those who experience panic or panic attacks because I have been there, and I know how hard it is to go it alone. I also love to work with the differently-abled, especially those of us out there with limb-differences. But really, rather than classify people by their difficulties, I would want to work with people who most need gentle guidance and a relationship intended to bring them to their own sense of health and happiness. It is for the people who bear their suffering alone, or heavily, or in need of rest, who I want to work with. I desire to help people discover their own dignity, worth, and meaning for life. It is my role as counselor, then, to help remove any barriers preventing people from seeing this inherent goodness, either from previous trauma, a difficult childhood, loss of identity, life-adjustments, physical and mental illness, or other stressors.

I often come from an existential and CBT perspective, and I try to use this to help you cultivate growth in your life. But first and foremost, I approach with curiosity because you are unique, and brilliant, and counseling is all about you, not me. Counseling is a chance for you to explore what matters most to you, as well as to affirm and accept the beauty of who you are right now. We can identify what thoughts, behaviors, and emotions you experience regularly that are helpful, and which are not helpful. From there we can set achievable goals to lead you towards what you most value. I am also trained in integrating religion and spirituality into counseling sessions if it is something you desire, to the extent that you desire it.

A little about me to see if you might feel comfortable working together: I am actually new to the Austin area, as a military spouse I move around a bit more often than the average person. But I love my husband and I’m enjoying the Texas weather, although I think the Midwest will always really be home for me. I just recently came from Ohio, where I got my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Franciscan University of Steubenville. I have about a million hobbies, including making art, yoga, knitting all forms of clothing, hiking, playing with my puppy, and reading every book under the sun.

I would love to get to know you better and see about working together in the future. Don’t hesitate to reach out!
