It's competitive out there
livin' in A-town
Austin culture can breed a lot of competitiveness and I'm-not-good-enough thoughts. If you are new to Austin, which a lot of you are, moving here was probably exciting. But you also experienced a loss of community, of family. A city like ours that is secular, competitive, urban, fast-paced, and demanding can breed isolation, fear, anxiety, and depression. You may end up in the mindset of “I’m not this, I’m not that, I don’t have this, I’m behind, they know something I don’t, I’m not going to get what I need."
"I should be happy all the time"
(are you sure?)
We live in a feel-good culture and we get lots of crazy messages that we can and should be happy all the time. It gets confusing. While there is a lot to be said for positive thinking, there is also a lot to be said for the reality of what it is to be human. Having the full range of emotions is a fact of being human and is what creates meaning in our lives. Without loss and pain, we wouldn't appreciate gain and pleasure.

how therapy helps
At Therapy Austin, we aren’t promising to get rid of any of your feelings for good. We are absolutely dedicated to guide and teach and help you reduce your suffering. We are dedicated to helping you learn how to be anchored and balanced through any emotional experience. The way we respond to our thoughts and feelings is the key to this. We all have ingrained habits. In counseling, your therapist will help you become aware of your habits and guide you in forming new ones, ones that will enable you to be the person you want to be in this world.
