Jonathan Berger, LPC Intern
Supervised by Bridget McCauley, LPC-S
My name is Jonathan and I’d like to say welcome to Therapy Austin, a place where you will encounter care and support for whatever you are going through. I recognize the choice to begin counseling can be a huge step for many people, and hold great respect for anyone with the courage to try. By using this space and fostering a positive relationship one week at a time, you can encounter freedom to examine the parts of your life that trouble you and take meaningful steps toward better ways of living.
In the beginning, our aims as counselor and client are often simple. Build trust, come to know one another. Over time and through conversation, our shared efforts can focus with greater clarity. Name the problem as you know it now. Create a vision for what a better reality could look like and feel like.
I utilize the power of collaboration and humor in session, and my clients often find sessions to be a balance of lightheartedness and deep honesty. As a counselor, I draw from an existential approach to counseling, valuing each client's unique perspective on what meaningful change could look like. I have experience working with individuals facing a wide range of clinical issues including life transitions, relationship problems, depression, anxiety, meaninglessness, school difficulties, spiritual struggles, and family conflict.
To give you some context about my path to this place, I want to share some of my story with you. I grew up in Houston, Texas before traveling west to attend Texas Tech University. Originally working toward a degree in engineering, I made a major transition in my first year of college by choosing instead to pursue a career as a Professional Counselor. As a problem-solving oriented person by nature, that decision represented for me a desire to work directly with people and issues we each grapple with. I graduated from Texas Tech with a B.A. in Human Development and Family Studies before moving to Austin, TX and earning my M.A. in Professional Counseling from Texas State University.
Outside of my work, I enjoy hanging out with my wife and our adorable dog Lewis. I am an avid disc golf player and can frequently be found at the many courses and parks in and around Austin. I am also a nerd in the truest sense, and love playing board game with friends as well as all things fantasy and sci-fi.
