My name is Jonathan and I’d like to say welcome to Therapy Austin. I hope you’ll find that this is a place where you will encounter care and support for whatever you are going through. Counseling is a wholly worthwhile endeavor, capable of creating so much good in the lives of clients who commit to seeking what it can offer them. I genuinely believe this process will bring about true flourishing for you and those you share your life with. You are not in this alone.
In the beginning, our aims are often simple. Build trust, come to know one another. Over time and through conversation, our collaborative efforts can focus with greater clarity. Name the problem as you know it now. Create a vision for what a better reality could look like and feel like. I believe that your natural orientation is toward wellness, to exist in the world as your best self. And while I expect that it will require much of you throughout your journey, it does not have to be scary or intimidating however. I aim to make therapy as approachable and down-to-earth as possible. I highly value humor and lightheartedness in session, seeing them as natural and healthy balances to the heaviness that problems can bring with them.
As a counselor I draw from an existential approach to counseling, valuing each client's unique perspective on what meaningful change would look like. I have experience working with individuals facing a wide range of clinical issues including life transitions, relationship problems, depression, anxiety, meaninglessness, school difficulties, spiritual struggles, and family conflict among many others.
I grew up in Houston, TX before traveling west to attend Texas Tech University. Originally aimed at earning a degree in engineering, I made a major transition in my freshman year choosing instead to pursue a career in psychotherapy. A problem-solving oriented person by nature, that decision represented for me a desire to work directly with people and issues we each grapple with. I graduated from Texas Tech with a B.A. in Human Development and Family Studies before moving to Austin, TX with my wife and earning my M.A. in Professional Counseling from Texas State University.
Outside of my work, I enjoy hanging out with my wife and our adorable dog Lewis. I am an avid disc golf player and can frequently be found at the many courses and parks in and around Austin. I am also a nerd in the truest sense, and love playing board game with friends, as well as all things fantasy and sci-fi.
