Frequently Asked questions

You've got questions. You know you do.

How much does counseling cost?

It can cost over $150 per session, but at Therapy Austin, we are committed to affordable therapy. Our rates can range from $65-$125. For more information about our fees, scroll on down to the Fees & Locations page.

Where are you located?

You are asking good questions. We have three office suites. Two are centrally located at Burnet Road and 51st Street and our north office is at Steck and Shoal Creek. A map and directions are given on Fees & Locations page.

Do you take insurance?

We do not process any insurance claims at our office. Many insurance companies will reimburse you some percentage of the money you spend on therapy. Call your insurance company to ask them how that works and if they will reimburse you for services provided by Therapy Austin counselors.

Can I get free therapy?

You may be able to find free counseling services at some of the agencies who get funding from governmental entities. Therapy Austin does not get any outside funding and is not able to offer free counseling. If you can not afford at least $65-$75 every week for counseling, then our agency is not the best choice for you.

What is sliding scale?

A standard sliding scale determines your fee depending on what your income is. We don't offer that. Instead we offer many low-fee spots, which we give out based on availability and the honor system. If you say you can't afford $125 per session, we believe you. You may choose a discounted fee of $95, $85, or $65-$75. Our low-fee spots are limited in number and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

What are your extended hours?

We have some early-bird counselors willing to see clients at 7am on weekdays. We also have night-owls who will schedule appointments as late as 9pm on weekdays. On the weekends, we offer sessions from 9am up to 8pm. When you fill out the request form, you can let us know what times work for you.

What can I expect in counseling?

We're going to send you back to the first page for that one. Click on "Welcome" at the top of this page.

Who's running this place?

Therapy Austin was founded by two counselors who have been in private practice for years here.

Fees

We charge the market rate for a 50-minute session, which is $125. For those of you who need a discount, we offer several options for reduced fees ranging from $65 to $95. Instead of using a traditional sliding-scale where clients prove their ability to pay, we use the honor system. You tell us what works for you and we believe you. You can trust us to tell you what works for us as well. Because we need to keep the lights on and the counselors paid, we have a limited number of openings at each discounted level. You may indicate your ability to pay on the appointment request form. If you can not afford at least $65 every week for counseling, then our agency is not the best choice for you.

We do not process any insurance, but your provider might reimburse you for services you receive here. If you need to use insurance, call your provider and ask about reimbursement.

Three LOCATIONS

The Main & Annex offices are a stone's throw from each other. From Burnet Road & 51st Street, turn east on 51st. The North offices are just northwest of Steck & Shoal Creek.

New clients: Check the welcome email from your counselor to be sure you know which building you are meeting in.

FOR THE ANNEX: From Burnet onto W. 51st, take an immediate right into the parking lot behind Tiny Pies. We have three spaces reserved at the back of that lot for Therapy Austin. You may park there, or in any open spaces not reserved for other specific businesses. If there are no open spaces, you may park in the street. Our suite is above Triana's Tailors, on the back of her building, up the outside stairs.

FOR THE MAIN OFFICE: Continue from Burnet & W. 51st to 1415 W. 51st, the third property on the right. Please park in the street and be thoughtful about avoiding our neighbors' driveways. Our Main Office is in a two-story green building, with a second-story porch. Enter the front door on the bottom floor and look to your left for the lighting system to alert your counselor you have arrived. Turn to your right to find the lobby. Ahead of you in the hallway is a cold water and hot tea service. Please help yourself, then have a seat, make yourself comfortable and your counselor will join you shortly.

FOR THE NORTH OFFICE: Building 4 at 8500 Shoal Creek is a bit of maze. The upside is that there is plenty of free parking all the way around the property. Please read these detailed instructions to access our Suite 202.

Types of treatment

Our counselors are trained in many modalities of treatment. Usually, they are called by some string of letters like LMNOP, which doesn't mean anything to the people receiving the treatment. Read below to learn about some of these evidence-based practices.

Types of treatment

Our counselors are trained in many modalities of treatment. Usually, they are called by some string of letters like LMNOP, which doesn't mean anything to the people receiving the treatment. Read below to learn about some of these evidence-based practices.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

EMDR therapy is different from “talk therapy” in that it changes how distressing experiences are stored in the brain. By “processing” these experiences, distressing emotions, beliefs, and body sensations are reduced and what is useful from the experience is learned and retained. It is a top-choice therapy to heal from trauma, abuse, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. EMDR can also help improve future performance in relationships, work, school, and life.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT therapy teaches practical tools and skills to manage emotions better, get through distressing situations, improve relationships, and change behaviors that cause problems in the present.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT therapy teaches how to change thoughts that cause unwanted behaviors and feelings as well as overcome barriers to goals.

Mindfulness Techniques

Mindfulness exercises help train the brain to manage emotions better and boost awareness, focus, and working memory. This can help people get more out of therapy by strengthening important areas of the brain so it is easier to make changes.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

This approach combines mindfulness and some of the behavioral therapies. At the core of ACT work is the recognition that your current habits of avoiding emotions and being overly involved in your thoughts is actually causing your suffering to get worse, not better. ACT therapy will teach you how to make room for feelings, how to find distance from unhelpful thinking, and will redirect you to live a meaningful life by way of embracing what is important to you.

Depth Psychology

Depth Psychology refers to practices that explore the deeper parts of our process. Using tools like dreams and archetypes, depth psychology helps us to understand our own unconscious beliefs and patterns, in order that we might come to embrace ourselves in a more fulfilling way.

Culturally Competent Counseling

We strive to create a warm and welcoming environment for everyone that walks through our door. We know that your background, experiences, preferences, and culture all combine to create your unique way of walking through the world. Our counselors work to understand the ways in which our society can be unkind to us based on our race, sexual orientation, religion, gender identity, culture and ideas. We are committed to offering an open and affirming space, while understanding that you are the expert on your unique experience. With a gentle curiosity for your story, we welcome you.
